Endocrinology Fellowship Program
Endocrinology Fellowship Program
Program Overview
The overall goal and objective of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School is to provide superior training and experience for our Endocrine Fellows to become highly qualified sub-specialists and to engage in the clinical, research, and teaching missions of Rutgers New Jersey Medical School.
We have a two-year training program that offers Endocrinology Fellows extensive clinical experience in the sub-specialty, opportunities to develop and/or participate in clinical research and quality improvement studies, training in relevant procedural (e.g. thyroid biopsy) and radiology skills (e.g. thyroid ultrasound), and access to basic science research. Fellows rotate through Pediatric Endocrinology and Reproductive Endocrinology as part of their training experience. Each fellow is expected to participate in some research activity, submit abstracts to appropriate endocrine/diabetes related scientific meetings, and contribute to the preparation of manuscripts for publication.
Throughout the training program the fellow will develop core competencies in patient care, medical knowledge, professionalism, interpersonal and communication skills, practice-based learning and improvement, and system-based practice. Since the essential practice of endocrinology, diabetes, metabolism is not procedure-based (with the exception of thyroid biopsy), but cognitive in nature, we evaluate our first and second-year fellows based on their development and maturity in the six core competencies. In general, we expect that the transition from first year to second year fellow will be reflected in qualitative, measurable traits rather than quantitative procedural skills.
