Low Vision
Amy Lam, OD, MS
Comprehensive care of patients with visual impairment
or patients who are blind includes meticulous refraction, individual
counseling on the selection and use of low vision aids, mobility
training, and referral to social services. The goal of the Low
Vision Service is to enable persons who are partially sighted
to remain functional and independent when standard spectacles, contact
lenses, or surgery no longer suffice. A full range of devices are
regularly designed and dispensed, including hand-held, stand, and
spectacle magnifiers; telescopes; electro-optical and special illumination
devices; closed circuit television; and computer systems.
Janet Rowley-Cebula, OTR/L, CLVT
Janet is an Occupational Therapist Specializing in Low Vision, with over 25 years of experience working with individuals who are blind or visually impaired. She also has low vision herself.
As a specialist in low vision, Janet assesses and educates individuals in determining the amount of usable vision that the patient has remaining; and decide on interventions that will maximize the patient’s ability to use their remaining vision for daily activities.
These may include tasks such as:
- Reading/writing
- Grooming and personal care
- Eating and preparing meals
- Managing medications
- Using cell phones and computers with assistive technology
- Getting around
Learning alternative techniques to manage daily living when vision cannot be fully restored is key to increasing independence and quality of life.
“On every visit, I learned more from Janet and always returned home feeling so much better about myself… I have returned to my life as I knew it before having low vision.” – Kathy P.
